Alex here from Toronto, Ontario Canada... Here's the email I sent out to a select group of young(er) folks I work with. Maybe this will help you get a good turn out and give some incentive to come out:
Subj: Breakfast on Friday - A 21st century career guide
Hi guys and gals,
My friend and accomplished author Dan Pink (www.danpink.com) invited me to run a Johnny Bunko Breakfast. So on Friday at 8:30am let's meet and have breakfast at the Timmy's downstairs at 56 Wellesley St W. I will have the following for the first 6 people that RSVP:
-- 6 free copies of the book http://www.johnnybunko.com
-- 6 sets of free Johnny Bunko chopsticks
We'll have a quick discussion -- I'll gather your thoughts, take a few pix and let you be by 9:15 or so.. What do you think? This may help you think about your career in a whole new different way... Forward please to others who may be interested but please make SURE they RSVP. I would like to hear from folks that really want to hear a new message about their careers.
ps. This is not OPS sponsored at all -- just an idea I had inspired by Dan..
<OPS is the Ontario Public Service, btw>
Workforce Development Council Snohomish County will be hosting its Bunko Breakfast at 8:00am on Wednesday, October 15. We've developed an online registration page for the event, and emailed it to our email list of 1,600+...hoping to get a good 50 or so educators, parents, counselors, etc. to show up and Bunko it out with us.
Check it out here: www.eventbrite.com/.../155547246
Also! I conned (okay, asked) Dan to join us for an introduction via Skype and he agreed!
I can't wait!
We'll be holding our event on the 27th here in the Philippines.
Instead of giving the books away to the first 6 who RSVP or arrive, I'll be holding a contest every day until the 27th to see who gets a free copy of the book.
I hope Mr. Pink decides to (virtually) drop by.
Hi all. Here in San Francisco, I am hosting my "breakfast" for Academy of Art University students on Sept 8th from 12-3. We'll tell stories related to the 6 lessons. We'll award a book/chopsticks set for the "best story" from each lesson. I'm also teaching Whole New Mind in some of my other classes. Dan's getting tons of love over here. Granted as an art school, we have common beliefs! Have fun everyone! I promise we will. Look forward to seeing everyone's pictures.
And yes Dan, you always have an open invitation to speak at the Academy of Art University about any subject you so desire.
Hi there, we'll be hosting a breakfast for our IT Graduates. I'm very excited about getting the opportunity to share this book with the Grads as the book is not even available in Australian bookshops yet. I’m looking forward to hearing the Grads thoughts on the lessons and I'll be sure to post them along with our picture after the event.
Hi there, I will be hosting the breakfast in Costa Rica next October, the day and place are TBD but will be posted on my alma mater for giving advice to young engineers about to get out of college...
Looking foward to share with you the outcomes of the Costarrican "desayuno" (breakfast) and learn from yours
Here are 12 discussion questions that might be useful in the Bunko Breakfasts. Consider this list the first word, not the last, and add your own questions and refinements on this section of the site.
----------
1. This is the first American business book in manga. Does the medium detract from the message or enhance it? Why?
2. Lesson One says, “There is no plan.” Are there times, though, when planning is actually wise?
3. A key to Lesson One is the difference between making decisions for instrumental reasons or for fundamental reasons. Discuss a time when you chose one type of reason over another -- and explain how it worked out.
4. Lesson Two says to “Think strengths, not weakness.” How do you figure out what your strengths are? How do you find a way to build your work around these strengths.
5. Lesson Three, “It’s not about you,” seems sensible. But is it possible to follow this lesson too far?
6. Yes, persistence trumps talent, as Lesson Four says. But when does persistence become delusion? Or annoyance?
7. Diana tells Johnny that musicians and athletes embody Lesson Four because they “show up.” Is “showing up” enough? Are there other endeavors the reflect this lesson better?
8. How do you tell the difference between an excellent mistake and stupid mistake -- not in retrospect, but before you act? What’s an excellent mistake that you’ve made?
9. Most people make decisions and take action in the context of an organization. Do any organizations really permit -- let alone encourage -- their employees to make excellent mistakes?
10. What imprint do you hope to leave with your work?
11. Which lesson in the book made the most sense to you? The least?
12. What's going to happen to Johnny -- and Diana, Carlos, Yuko, and Dave -- next?
